New Orleans was founded by the French in Spring of 1718. To pay a war debt, France gave up control of Louisiana to Spain. Then in 1803, New Orleans went back to French rule. New Orleans was acquired by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase. This explains why the architecture of the French Quarter is Spanish. In the 19th century, New Orleans was the biggest port in the South, exporting most of the nation's cotton output and other products to Western Europe and New England. It was the largest and most important city in the South thus, it was an early target for capture by the Union during the Civil War. New Orleans possesses a rich and unique cultural and architectural heritage. From the World War II Museum to swamp tours, you’ll never forget this fascinating Educational Destinations adventure.
